Our Dramatic Society is one of the most vibrant and inclusive organizations on the Hilltop. There are opportunities for experienced performers to tackle challenging roles as well as for beginners to try something they may never have done before.
Much like Salisbury's mission, our Theater Department, led by Director Jordan Rochelson, is devoted to preparing young men for the real world. We aim to build within our students the qualities that will help them develop into upstanding, caring, and successful gentleman. Through storytelling, students can hone their skills as empathetic listeners while also cultivating their burgeoning creativity.
Our goal is to expose students to all of the challenging and varied work that goes into staging a full production. Participants learn about stagecraft, acting, theater history, playwriting, direction, set building, lighting, and sound. Recent productions include The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Peter and the Starcatcher, Spamalot, To Kill a Mockingbird, And Then There Were None, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
In coordination with neighboring schools, Salisbury is now entering its third year of its very own Shakespeare Festival entitled Shakespeare on the Steps. This stripped-down approach to theater allows upper-form students to perform monologues and scenes of their choosing on the Senior Steps of our campus. Audience members enjoy a picnic dinner on the lawn while cheering on friends. Shakespeare on the Steps supports the philosophy that theater does not need to be a stuffy endeavor, but rather it can be a participatory activity where laughter and cheering is encouraged. The beauty of theater is that it can do just that for anyone and everyone.
